![]() ![]() Despite all the barriers in their relationship, the novel is testament to their perseverance. It is unbelievable how Samuel and Isaiah find the time to work on their relationship and be invested in it enough to make it blossom. Life under slavery is miserable, and they face multiple hardships. As she is much older than Samuel and Isaiah, Maggie offers them wisdom and great insight on life in the new world. She often sneaks good food from the master's table and brings it to them. Maggie is also a slave who works in the master's house as a housekeeper and has a motherly relationship with the two men. Their love is condemned, but they are determined to stay together despite the pushback from the society they live in. While working at the plantation, Samuel and Isaiah fall deeply in love. Together with the other slaves, they have been captured by white settlers from their ancestral land and forcefully brought to America to work in the cotton fields. In the Deep South during the slave era, Samuel and Isaiah are enslaved at the Halifax cotton plantation.
